Tiny Garden | 2021
Steel, soil, seeds, 3D printed resin, plywood, cardboard

Tiny Garden is a seed sprouter kit whose level of success is defined by the user. The kit includes a self-assembled planter, a watering cup, soil and seeds packets, and an instruction sheet. Following the recipe, the user controls the amount planted, environment, and degree of care. However, the nature of seeds hinders the user from being the sovereign. The seed packet is a blend of 8 different herbs with different growth rates, intentionally designed for partial failure no matter the execution. The process requires frequent user interference and observation, and the user openly determines the result and lifespan of the product.

Seats for the Productive, Boredom | 2021
Steel, silver / steel, soil, seeds, water / oak, paint / stool

Seats for the Productive, Boredom invites an open conversation about labor and productivity. Industrialization and monetization of labor have established the standard to which we evaluate our exertions and time. We determine the quality of labor by the quantity of its tangible or profitable outcome. Our vocabulary compounds time with words like ‘consuming,’ ‘saving,’ and ‘wasting,’ imparting the price of time as an expenditure. As a result, we condemn idle time and lack of labor—boredom—as a sign of un-productiveness. My focus lies in reinstating the complexities of boredom, reframing it as an opportunity. Using nonprecious materials and repetitive practices, I create an experience of boredom in the project. The experiencer encounters an assembled steel box with erect steel rods and intuitively interacts with the ring that falls onto the rods over an undefined time frame. Unassisted by tools and uninstructed, one relies on their labor and consciousness for the partaking and its duration. The monotonous engagement stagnates the pace of time and yields no economic output; therefore, it discharges the inculcated expectation for a purpose or an accomplishment. Ultimately, the experience becomes user-defined and fosters an amended notion of productivity that neither focuses on return for labor nor span of time. The bored experiencer walks away from the Seats, subsequently able to distill the substance and capabilities of labor and consciousness.
